What Is Parquet Flooring

Parquet wood flooring comes from the French word “parqueterie” and refers to wooden panels or blocks that are laid out on the floor in different geometric and symmetrical patterns. It is available in either solid or engineered parquet wood form. Engineered parquet wood refers to a layer of hardwood being placed on top of high-grade quality plywood or other materials. Ultimately, they both provide the same look.

They are various species of wood are used to manufacture these floor panels including oak, walnut, mahogany, maple, cherry, and other exotic hardwoods. Hence, this gives rise to the desired wood-like parquet flooring texture. Furthermore, due to the characteristics of the wood, it aids in sound absorption and resists trapping and emitting odours.

Depending on the type of wood used for construction, the price of the parquet flooring varies.

This flooring type is made up of planks that are different from those wood planks. The parquet planks are much smaller but the main difference arises in how they are placed and laid out on the floor. This layout is in the form of geometrical and decorative patterns such as herringbone, chevron, chequerboard, and basketweave.

Despite the many different patterns, wood, and types of parquet (solid wood or hardwood), the overall texture of the floor is smooth, yet it still retains the natural wood texture. This provides a very warm and comfortable feel when users walk on it.

Types of wood used

In Singapore, there are common types of woods used in parquet flooring: Burmese and Indonesian teak, American Oak and Maple Wood to name a few. These different woods have varying maturity and times at which they were cut down (logged). In Singapore, the thickness of the planks is between 10 to 20 millimetres. Their sizes vary from company to company.

For Burmese and Indonesian teak

Their logging periods are from approximately 80 years and 35 years respectively. Compared to Indonesian Teak, Burmese Teak is of a darker shade and contains more oil in its wood.

Maple wood

They tend to have light beige colours with occasional hints of red.

American Oak

They come mainly in two types; red and white. Due to its harbouring high tannic acid concentration, it makes it more resistant to fungal growth.

How To Install Parquet Flooring

The installation process of parquet flooring is more complicated as compared to vinyl or laminate flooring. It requires some meticulousness and skill to install the parquet planks in different patterns and designs.

We recommend employing the services of professionals to install parquet floors for you. If you do plan to carry out its installation yourself, there are certain tips that you should keep in mind.

Some of these tips and the procedures of how to install a parquet floor are discussed below:

  1. Consult the installation guide that comes with the parquet flooring during all steps of installation. Prepare all your tools and accessories according to the installation guide before starting the process.
  2. The first step in the installation is to prepare the floor on which parquet planks will be installed. Parquet flooring works best on concrete or wood floors.  Synthetic flooring such as vinyl or laminate should be removed prior to installation.
  3. Use a premixed floor leveller to level and prepare the floor for installation.
  4.  For the concrete floor, a layer of polyethene film should be added before laying out the parquet planks.
  5. The next step is to lay out the planks in the desired pattern you want. This requires careful measurement and planning so the final pattern comes out perfectly. Use all the necessary tools to ensure the perfect pattern. Cut pieces of the planks using a handsaw or circular saw. Please note to be careful when cutting to prevent injuries. Clamping the saws to the table can help minimize the risk of injury during cutting.
  6. Always include expansion gaps while cutting the planks and during their layout.
  7. Once the pattern has been identified and laid out, the next step is to glue them to the floor. For glueing the planks, use a high-quality parquet flexible adhesive. A normal all-purpose adhesive will not work for parquet planks.
  8. Avoid using nails for laying the planks on the floors.
  9. For the last row of planks, use a jigsaw to cut them to fit the area if required.
  10. Once the parquet planks have been laid out, the next step is to sand down the wood. This is a tricky step that requires extremely delicate handling.
  11. For brush lacquer finishing, it is important for it to be carried out with great care. Three layers of clear polyurethane finish should be applied to ensure maximum protection for the floor. Sand the floor after the application of the first two layers to ensure a smooth finish.
  12. You can even use engineered wood planks since they come pre-sanded and pre-finished. This saves you from the effort of carrying out these difficult steps yourself.

How To Maintain and Restore Parquet Flooring

This wood flooring requires minimum maintenance. Regular cleaning and mopping will ensure that no tough stains remain on the floor that would call for removal.

The recommended care and maintenance instructions for parquet flooring are described below:

  • You can use a broom or a vacuum cleaner with a soft attachment to remove all the dust and dirt from the surface of the parquet flooring. This should be done at least 2-3 times a week or more if the need be.
  • Apart from brooming, the parquet floor should be mopped weekly for the removal of grime and dirt that regular brooming might have left. The mop should be just damp so that it does residual moisture on the floor.
  • Wipe up any water or liquid spills immediately as the standing liquid will damage the wooden planks.
  • You can use cleaners and solutions specifically designed for parquet flooring to allow for thorough cleaning.
  • To maintain the shine of the parquet floor, you would be required to polish it from time to time. Again, use only specially designed products for polishing and avoid any harsh chemicals or tools which may damage the parquet floor permanently.
  • Since parquet floors can get damaged in moist and humid conditions, it is very important that the humidity level be controlled in a room, especially in the case of a kitchen or bathroom. Ensure proper ventilation and use dehumidifiers to prevent a humid environment.
  • Direct sunlight can cause the colour of parquet flooring to fade. Using curtains to prevent direct sunlight from falling on the floor for long periods of time can ensure that its shine does not get faded.
  • Parquet floors are vulnerable to physical damage from dragging heavy furniture and items. Always use felt pads for furniture legs to prevent them from permanently scratching your floor. Trim your pets’ nails for the same reason as well.
  • Avoid wearing high and thin heels on the parquet floors since they, too, can damage the floor. Use rugs on areas that are prone to high traffic.
  • Some parquet floors have a varnish, lacquer, or shellac finishing which starts to fade after a few months. These floors should be buffed with a special wax polish suitable for parquet floors to restore their shine.

How To Remove Stains From Parquet Flooring

Try to remove stains with a damp cloth followed by a dry cloth. If the stain is still there, you can use a non-abrasive wood cleaner with a soft cloth to gently remove the stain.

To remove stains that seem to affect the shine of the parquet floor, use a specially designed cleaner to wipe off the stain. You may need to use fine steel wool to remove the stain followed by a layer of wax designed for parquet floors. This will bring back the shine on the floor.

Parquet flooring is one of the most visually appealing and stylish types of flooring available. You can add extra shine to the floors by adding multiple layers of lacquer to match your interior design.

Conversely, you can leave the parquet floor unpolished to give a raw and distressed look in an industrial interior design. Thus, with regular maintenance, you can keep your parquet floor as good as new for years.

Some of the frequently asked questions related to parquet flooring are listed in the next section.

Pros and Cons of Parquet Flooring

Pros:

Furthermore, over time, the wood will not deteriorate if taken care of. Instead, it has the likely possibility of looking better with age.

Besides the amazing visual aesthetic, parquet flooring is also relatively easier to maintain and can be cleaned simply by sweeping and mopping. It is also an extremely durable material that can last for decades.  Moreover, due to its texture, it prevents the trapping of dirt and other pollutants and would be an ideal flooring for people who are sensitive to developing allergies, such as children.

Cons:

One major consideration when getting parquet flooring is the cost of it. Due to it being solid wood and the difficult installation, it is definitely more on the pricier end. Furthermore, maintenance is essential in ensuring that the wood retains its original quality. Processes such as varnishing and sanding would need.

Although the flooring is extremely permeable to water, it is still susceptible to damage from excess moisture. Hence it is important to keep the floor as dry as possible. Lastly, the wood used is prone to scratches by heavy furniture or sharp objects.

Repairing Parquet Flooring

Water Damage

If water gets on the wooden flooring it can get damaged and the damaged tiles will need to be replaced. You have to find similar tiles so they match your current parquet floor.

To repair parquet floors after water damage, the first step is to remove the damaged pieces of parquet. After they have been removed, remove the adhesive from the floor beneath the parquet by using a scrapper.

The new tiles have to be given enough time to acclimatize in the room so that they will not contract or expand after installation causing other tiles to be affected.

The next step is to apply the adhesive to the floor and wait for a while before installing the new parquet tile over it. After placing the tile, put some heavy objects on it for a few hours so that it sticks properly after which the floor is ready to be used.

Scratches

Sanding and varnishing are some of the ways that can be carried out to remove or reduce the appearance of scratches and indentations on your flooring! This is further discussed in the FAQs!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How to protect parquet flooring?

As mentioned previously, excessive moisture, heavy traffic, and sharp objects will damage the flooring. To protect it, you should minimize its exposure to moisture.

You should avoid wearing pointy heels while walking on parquet floors. Place rugs on areas where there is heavy traffic so that scratches could be minimized. To prevent indentations caused by furniture, felt pads should be placed beneath them.

A special wax intended for parquet floors can be used to be applied on and apply it to the floor every few months to refresh its appearance and remove minor scratches.

How to varnish parquet flooring?

The process of varnishing parquet floors starts by sanding the floor to create a smooth surface. A special varnish which is for parquet floors is poured over the floor from where it is evenly spread across the whole floor.

A roller is then used to spread the varnish first in the direction of the grain followed by spreading it across the direction of the grain.

If needed, you may apply two layers of varnish. Once the first layer has dried out, sand the floor again and apply a second layer of varnish and let it dry for a few hours.

What material is parquet flooring?

Parquet flooring can either be made of solid wood or engineered wood as mentioned previously. It can also comprise small tiles which are made of a thin metal or plastic skeleton or frame. Over the frame is a stitched mesh of paper, cloth, or plastic.

On top of this frame and mesh is the top layer made of hardwood which can be made from any of the hardwood species. This top layer of hardwood gives parquet flooring its distinctive colour, grain, and texture.

How to sand parquet flooring?

When you want to sand a parquet floor, it is better to engage a professional. There are certain things to consider which are discussed below:

  • Since parquet flooring can be made from different materials, the top layer material plays a role in how it can be sanded. For example, a pure timber top layer can be sanded thoroughly before it is ready. However, a laminate top layer cannot be sanded.
  • The second thing to consider is the direction of the grain. Depending on the pattern in which the parquet is laid out, you would have to sand in that direction.
  • Use sander with 40 grit paper or lower depending on the condition of the floor. Start with the coarser paper and continue towards the finer one to finish with the 120 grit paper. You would want to sand at a 45° to the grain to achieve the maximum effect.
  • Finish with the buffer starting with the coarse grit and finishing with the fine grit.
  • After the sanding process has finished, clean the floor and apply a layer of varnish to further enhance the appearance of the parquet floor. The varnish also helps in sealing the floor which helps it to minimize further damages.

Vinyl Vs Parquet Flooring

Aesthetic

Comparatively, if you are looking for a more natural and organic look for your home, parquet flooring definitely seals the deal with its wood grain visuals. However, vinyl has its positives too! This includes having many different designs and colours for you to pick from!

Maintenance

In terms of maintenance, definitely vinyl would be relatively easier as it is much more water-resistant than parquet. Furthermore, parquet is more prone to scratching by sharp and heavy items. However, if cared for properly, parquet can definitely last longer!

Cost

Their price points are similar for both materials especially when you take into account additional costs such as labour and material pricing.
